Perfiditas by Alison Morton

In PERFIDITAS, Carina is settled six years into her new life in Roma Nova. She’s been kept busy in her military career as a Praetorian – training, going on operations, exercises and exchange visits. She’s still in love with her life partner and they have three children. You’d think after her struggles and terrifying adventures in INCEPTIO, I’d leave her alone, but I couldn’t resist…

My characters had been bubbling away in my head for many years ever since I walked on my first Roman mosaic in northern Spain. At age eleven, I wanted to know who the people were who had lived in houses with such beautiful floors: what did they eat, what did they work at, what were the children and parents like? As I grew older and studied the Romans more formally, I appreciated what a complex, clever and determined society they had made. But suppose women had had a more prominent role?

Bubble, bubble in my head…

In 2009, I scribbled INCEPTIO within 90 days, triggered by watching a terrible film and thinking I could do better. After many rewrites and re-workings, my Roma Nova sprang to life and I had created a lively, vulnerable, hot-tempered, but determined heroine. By the end of INCEPTIO she’d turned into quite a tough cookie and I realized she was going to have many more adventures.

Creating a character who has almost become family is a huge responsibility. She has the right to a life, as do her hero, her friends and, naturally, her enemies. And the author has the responsibility to keep heaping trouble on her. How our heroine reacts to the continuous piling on of problems is something readers have told me they love.

In a Roman society, particularly one with Republic-style notions of honour, virtue and service to the state, betrayal is the most shocking crime, far more so than in our liberal society. Traitors are hunted down and dealt with robustly. So, of course, I gave in to the temptation to heap this particular problem on to Carina.

Roma Nova is a complete alternative world with a historical timeline of its own, so I think there is a great deal more to share with readers. The third book featuring Carina is out in the summer, but the next set of three delve back a little further into her family.

Praise for Perfiditas

“Alison Morton has built a fascinating, exotic world! Carina’s a bright, sassy detective with a winning dry sense of humour. I warmed to her quickly and wanted to find out how she dealt with the problems thrownin her path. The plot is pretty snappy too and gets off to a quick start which made it easy to keep turning the pages. There are a fair number of alternative historical fictions where Rome never disappeared, but for my money this is one of the better ones.” – Simon Scarrow, author of the Eagle (Macro and Cato) series

“Pure enjoyment! A clever, complex plot set in the beguilingly convincing fictional country of Roma Nova. Scenes and characters are sometimes so vividly described that I felt I was watching a movie. This compelling tale rendered me inseparable from my copy right up to the last turn of the page.”– Sue Cook, writer and broadcaster
